THE NEW ALGOL

USNS ALGOL is one of eight Fast Sealift Ships the pride of the Military Sealift Command Strategic Sealift Force. These ships are almost as large as an aircraft carrier -- 946 feet long -- and are capable of speeds in excess of 30 knots, rendering them especially suited to their primary mission: the rapid transport of U.S. Army unit equipment -- tanks, helicopters, wheeled vehicles and other heavy equipment -- to support deployed troops worldwide. The eight Fast Sealift Ships were converted from what were formerly the largest and fastest container ships in the U.S. flag commercial fleet.  The cargo hold was redesigned into a series of decks connected by ramps so that vehicles can now be driven in and out of storage areas for rapid loading and unloading. Four cranes were installed -- twin cranes amidships capable of lifting 35 long tons and twin cranes aft capable of lifting 50 long tons. (A long ton is 2,240 pounds). The ship also has a helicopter landing area.

USS COLE

These are time-lapse photos of the recovery of the USS Cole.  In the first photo, a transport ship is "flooded" to allow it underneath the disabled USS Cole.  USS Cole was transported from Aden to Pascagoula by the Norwegian heavy transport ship M/V Blue Marlin.  As the photos progress, the USS Cole is secured to the deck of the transport ship.  Then the transport is slowly raised to the surface of the water to get underway.
